Return from Damascus to Tabriz

On the river silvery ray
Crescent passing calmly laid,
And forgot... On water gloomy
Lane is gleaming moony...
I am walking looking for
The reflection left upon
The nocturnal water dreamy,
I am walking on this gleaming
Ray amid the river; tipsy,
I am walking like a Gipsy...
Magic crooning of the flute
Is reflecting on the mute
Water flowing; I incline,
Scoop, and drink this melody...
In the river yet I see
Hour one, another drift...
"Why have ye these hours ta'en?"

- To make the rosarý of it to pray,
I collect the hours lunar...

Answered river tó me; Looming
In the deep of night the fire,
Coming, coming to me nigher,
On the water walking hast'ly...
Sufi lord I see with blazing
Pole-axe staff... The troubled fire
As if saying, "Any mire
I shall rend, incinerate,
I am the burner of the veils..."

Sufi lord: Ray is painted with the brush,
Subtle lunar dew, it lasts
While is crying seagull, "Hey!
For thee Master laid the way..."

Me: If you won't respond, what be?

Sufi lord: Only fallen leaves in memory...

Me: But they don't hear even rain,
All signs for them - an empty cane...

Sufi lord:

Sounds their voice calling to Faith,
"Thy salvation is this, this way."
Rumi, Masnavi 1:1566

Me: I may assay by Gate to call...

Sufi lord: The tacit - rainy drops upon
The glass thou readest well...

They guard their hearts for they sleep
by the gate of heavenly kingdom,
in abode of calling they stand;
they call creatures to cognition of God,
exalted is He, they cease not
calling the hearts.
Al-Jilani

Well, take this crystal of eclipse,
The stone of reverse of moon,
It is for you...

And so the stone black he gave
To me... "We then again
Shall meet, God willing, but
Anow ask..."

Me: When trial came and day got wan,
And in the well the poison fell...

Sufi lord:

The lover of God, majestic is He,
whose love is true and sincere,
entrusts himself, and all what he hath
to God.
Al-Jilani

You want the potion healing, take!
It is sincerity, a prayer, Faith...
In days of broken mirrors, ye
Shall truly know what Trust in God to be...

Concerning the words of God,
"And seek help in patience and prayer,"
some scholars say: It is the night prayer,
They seek help thereby to overcome self,
and to be patient with foe.
Al-Makki

The raven livid mirrors broke,
And fear in the river strode,
And hoarse became the day;
And voice of God by echo saith:
Th' escape from Me is only Me...
Wherever thou flee, -
There I am... Repent! Ignite
Thy candle 'gainst the raven Mine,
And turn to Me...

When Archangel Gabriel, on him be peace,
came to the prophet, blessings of God be upon him,
he asked, "O Gabriel, what is Trust in God?"
He replied: It is the knowledge that
creatures do not harm, nor avail, neither grant,
nor prohibit, and all hopes upon creatures are vain.
When a servant acts accordingly: relies not
upon anyone but on God,
and hopes in Him, and fears only Him,
and desires no one, but Him, - it is
the Trust in God.

Our traces on the ray away
The water wash, the words abate...
And in a whisper river saith,
"In seven echoes I disperse,
I am the fading froth..."
Only the muffled sounds afar
Of melody I hear... Ah...
The morning murmur of the hills
I wont to stroll amid... It is Tabriz...
