I am strolling, picking leaves
In the morning or at eve;
On the yellow left the dawn
Words of long-forgotten song;
On the red, sunsét has writ
What the heart can only read.
In a street deserted, old
I am walking on the stones, -
Stones ochre, brown; grass -
Wither'd whisper thus...
In my cot, in pot the leaves
I have placed, and lay to dream;
But someone, ah, aloud at
The door is knocking latch'd...
"Who is there? Say!" - 'Tis me!
Responded Dervish cheerfully...
Dervish: What a charming jar with leaves!
The ducks about to leave,
And leaves got yellow thereof...
Then he took from woollen bag
The ink-set, and paper, said,
"To miss these leaves, and ducks? But nay!"
And he began to paint...
Dervish: 'Tis done, a drum is heard,
This joy the soul besot;
Is whirling, whirling dervish, when
The God rewarded with presént...
And dancing then he sang:
هر چه کاری، از برای او بکار
چون اسیر دوستی ای دوستدار
Whate'er you do, do for God,
As a captive of love, O loving lord.
Rumi, Masnavi 2:1062
Dervish: It means - with all your heart...
شُکر کُن، غِّرِه مَشو، بینی مَکُن
گوش دار و هیچ خودبینی مَکُن
Don't be haughty, nor deluded; give thanks!
Be vigilant, discard thy self.
Rumi, Masnavi 1:3262
On Gratitude this vision take:
The God doth say, "I gave
The time and gifts to thee...
What have you brought to Me?"
For unto every one that hath shall be
given, and he shall have abundance: but from him
that hath not, even that which he hath
shall be taken away. And cast
ye out the unprofitable servant into the
outer darkness: there shall be
the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
Matthew 25:29,30
But look, I painted yesterday -
The running traces into space...
Let's follow these, maybé we shall
Find something there worth to paint...
But to the wisdom listen first:
وختم بالمزيد عند الشكر من غير
استثناء فقال تعالى: 〈لَئِنْ شَكَرْتُمْ
لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ〉 [إبراهيم: ٧]
The God, exalted is He, hath ordained
for Gratitude increase: He spake,
"If you are thankful, We shall increase ye."¹
