Termez. The Mirror
Mirror, silent why are you?
I've observed the corners. Few
Rags of paper and a pot
I could find. This garbage, what
Should I do therewith?
- Your skill - too weak for this...
Then I had removed a soot
From the vessel as I could...
- By the road a modern house
With a gate as open mouth,
What has been disgorged?
I went to the pointed lodge;
In the heap a needless book
I discovered soon, and took.
Then examined in my cot,
On returning, it was not
Very agéd, yet with tint -
Long ago as if it been...
Two rags of paper, it's a fact,
Were torn away from that
Volume. Long I peered at the
Mirror, till I heard, "Would be
Your knowledge broader..." So I spent
A day or two, this book to mend.
- To the volume homage pay!
With the book I went next day
To the library local. "What
A luck! Where hast thou got
This historic volume? At
The stall behind..?" Librarian said.
I gave the book without charge,
And sallied forth the stall to watch...
"In Arabíc - a page in that
Folder, blotted though and bad,"
The merchant told. A coin or two
I paid, and back as shadow flew...
The folder kept a yellow page
From some fár-off yellow age.
Scene: the lady, a lake, the man in white
garment.
[The wife of Al-Tirmidhi narrates:] Then I say
to him, "I would like to know who thou art?"
He replies, "One of angels I am, and we
travel along the earth, and we rear the holy
fane." In his right hand I saw a myrtle green
and fresh. And a basil¹ in his left hand. So
he says, holding these [plants], "We travel
along the earth, and we visit the servants [of
God]. This basil we enshrine in their hearts,
for the servitude to God them to raise.
We enshrine in the hearts of [elects] this
myrtle, - those of certitude and candour
are they, to let them learn Truth thereby.
This basil in Summer is the same. And this
myrtle doesn't alter both in Summer and in
Winter. My words are for Muhammad bin
Ali: Art not thou glad that these both be
for thee?" - He pointed at the myrtle and at
the basil.
Al-Hakim Al-Tirmidhi
Wizard: Two gifts, by will of God, I hold
To make a lake...
Lady: And what are they?
Wizard: An inspiration, poesy,
And ecstasy mystíc.
Lady: This ecstasy is what?
Wizard: Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they shall see God.
Matthew 5:8
The door I was about to touch,
But heard a screech of latch,
"Go and search another page..."
Seer: Though, from us some wage
You deserved:
From the collection: Al-Baqi, be content
with him God, told: God has installed
under the throne four pillars, and called
them "Tombs" - and it is the Frequented
Fane. And God spoke to the angels, "Around
it go!" Then He sent the angels, saying,
"Rear the fane upon earth like that in
strength!" And commanded the dwellers of
earth to go around this fane.
