Al-Jilani
Evening lay by hoary fog,
Fog of melting; descant slow,
Tranquil; a creeping timelessness,
A trance - a vague reflex
Of heaven on the water; glow
Of lonely moon in fume, like dove
Asleep behind the veil of dreams;
It seems that mist
Doth whelm my eyes to hide
The mystery... "But comest nigh!"
Said man; returned
The echo, "Comest here, seeker..." Words
Did triplicate, reverberate in heart...
Approached I saw a dervish sitting on the marble
Floor beside the tomb arcane and holy,
Incense I felt, inhaled... He told me,
"What seeker here looking for?"
Me: A gulp of water of the fog...

Me: Aye, recite me of the shoreless ocean deep...
Pir:
فإن النون سر عظيم هو باب الجود والرحمة
Thus Nun be mystery great,
'tis a gate of bounty and compassion.¹
Ibn 'Arabi
ن Nun - a spring of dreams, obscure, dim,
A wit doth swoon as luna waning when
Assays to haunt the thought-reflex of this -
Which not to be, and which exists, nor this, nor that,
A depth without deep, concealed
In self, a well of being, ocean yon
Beyond the nought and all; a treasure hid -
Potention absolute, a root, and source
Of oneness every; One and Sole, paternal fount.
"Without equal, onely I am Nun," the letter said,
"Alif ا - the Word I am; awareness, inert and drows',
And Waw و - the Spirit sleeping I and breath;
The blest tryad I am, an ocean boundless..."
Me: But say, expound how it did rouse...
Pir:
كنت كنزاً مخفياً لا أُعرف، فأحببت أن أُعرف
I been a treasure hid, unknown;
And I wanted to be known.²
Ibn 'Arabi
He spake, "I am أAlif, I do exist!
My night is Nun, My day is Word, My breath is Life,
I am the conch with Beauty hid." Then did
He say, commanded, "Be!" A multiplicity of opposites
Become... The One and many, One of every oneness - He.
Me: But speak and tell me of a man...
Pir:
فكان الإنسان الكامل روحاً
Perfect man is a spirit.²
Ibn 'Arabi
Who can compass the seven skies? Who can?
Who can contain the earth, all universe? Who, say?
Who may fly further than beyond, and not
To scorch the pinions... But know,
That God created fane of clay, and breathed
In it His Spirit-seed,
That angel may be raised... He did
Appeal to reeling heaven, humid earth,
And lofty mounts, "O ye, My grant accept, do not
Withdraw..." But they escaped in fear, thus
Enshrined was Nun in heart
Of fane, unconsciously which did accept this grant...
Me: Say please, what for man lives?
Pir:
فالإنسان الكامل هو المظهر الكلي
Perfect man is all-manifest²
Ibn 'Arabi
But listen why...
A lake does wave reflex of sky,
And wedge of fishes golden-scaled,
Entranced by image of the moon,
Intoxicated circumambulate...
And cane so lully croons,
As if a lisp of myriad of moths
Blue-wing'd - the strewing reveries...
And wind slumbérous amble loth
To leave this mystic lake where creeps
The night in love... Anon
Her beauty shall resound, reveal
In seed in dimness sown -
The lotus white will shine erelong...
Disclosing dreams and grace of night,
Disclosing Name caved in a shade, the song...
