Neyshabur. The Ravine
دره
In ravine there is a tree,
Always golden leaves it has;
Birds on them one day maybé
Their names have left...
Underneath this tree a leaf
Fallen on the snow I found, -
From the verses dropped a piece, -
In the soundlessness - a sound...
From the snow I moulded moon -
From the verses missing part...
What is written, leaf, on you?
- The strange Anqā...
After thought I went in haste,
But the road in knot had tied;
And the snow began again
To erase all signs...
Scholar: Be silent thou, now hist!
Should be the riddle underneath
The snow...
Me: As shadow stealing I will go...
Scholar: Well, and I have today
For thee another tale:
I heard Sheikh Abu Abd Al-Rahman Al-Sulami
said: I heard Muhammad bin Al-Hasan Al-Baghdādi
said: Abu Al-Hadid said: I heard Al-Muzaffar
Al-Jassās said: I was with Nasr Al-Kharrāt
one night in some place. We were discussing something
of knowledge. Al-Kharrāt said: When
someone remembers God, exalted is He, he
should know first, that God hath remembered him,
so his remembrance came from God's remembrance.
I disagreed with him, and he said, "If Al-Khadir,
peace be upon him, would be here, he
would testify my rightness!" Suddenly
we saw an old man hovering between the sky
and the earth. He approached us, greeted and said,
"Verily, he is right! One who remembers God
Most High - his remembrance is by grace of
God hath remembered him." We then
realized that it was Al-Khadir, peace be upon him.
Al-Qushayri
Said moon eclipsed:
Of Night-dreams I weave reflections, let
Them down the river drift;
Fishermen them catch with net,
And to their dwellings bring...
The Remembrance: Faith and Knowledge.
Al-Makki
Don't you see Sahl Al-Tustari, for he
is one of the masters and leaders of the way;
When he was asked, "What is food?"
he replied, "The remembrance of the Living who
never dieth."
Ibn 'Arabi
The more one can perceive -
The more he brings...
From the collection: From the messenger of God,
be he blessed: The superiority of the scholar
over the believers is like the superiority of
the full moon over the stars at night.
Mohsen Feiz Kashani
Then I saw the running upward steps,
The crescent waxing upon each;
And every one on every step
Does elevate, partake, enrich...
The aim of ardour of the faithful scholar is
the gate of proximity to God, exalted and
majestic is He.
Al-Jilani
I asked the moon eclipsed in vision this,
"Reveal'st thy way, and say..."
Replied the moon eclipsed to me,
And spake:
Behold, I gather together the charm
from every place where it is and from
every man with whom it is, swifter than
greyhounds and fleeter than light.
