Lahore. Tomb of Ali Hujwiri

Pilgrims in the street I met.

- We today are gath'ring at...
To be present letters should
When there is Initial. Would
You join?

So along the passage void
We began to glide. The arch
Did impede the ghostly march.

- Tell me, shadows, name of mine!

"The Fanā" was a reply.
Further - tawny shreds of page,
By the bookshop we delay'd...

Pilgrim: But we need a lifting breath,
I will look what merchant hath...

Erelong with olden print
He returned, "Behold! Breathe in!"
The square I saw, the wall, and shrine;
They called me, "Do not lag behind!"
I hurried to the group, before
The shrine we sat upon the floor.

Pir: The story I recite today
About the chest:

He [Abu Bakr Al-Warraq] relates the following
story: Muhammad bin Ali [Al-Tirmidhi], be
content with them God, handed to me some of his
writings, and gave order, "Into the river cast!"
But I couldn't, and placed it in the house, then
went back and said, "I have cast." He asked,
"What have you seen?" "Nothing" I replied. He
said, "You haven't cast! Return and throw in
the water!" So I returned full of doubts, and
cast his manuscript in the river. The water
parted asunder, and chest with open lid appeared.
As soon as the manuscript fell in the chest,
the lid shut. I returned and told what had
occured. "Now you have cast!" he said. I begged,
"O sheikh, this mystery to me reveal!" He told,
"I composed a treatise, incomprehensible by
wit, on the fundamentals of Faith and way. My
brother Khadir, peace be upon him, from me
desired this work. And God, exalted is He,
ordered the water to bring it to him.
Ali Hujwiri

Sage: From vessels I distilled the pith,
In questions I inset the keys,
In answers - doors...

Desciple: This bolted book of yours
Who'll find?

Sage: Whom God will guide...

Wizard: In cartouche we, by will of God,
Enclose your book, - 'twill not
Sink in stream of time...

On river's silence in the night
The seal is seen of moon,
And words of master come to mind,
"The seal of seer we put..."
