Return to Tabriz
بازگشت به تبریز
Fell a haze asleep,
And on the hills by snow laid;
I take a handful of this mist,
And in my hands it wake...
Clouds grey, where are you now
Hurrying to? To the brim of Earth, or else?
"To the Gates of Heaven..." Clouds
Did reply... The time to go back...
I sat on olden fallen tree;
Billows white of mounts swell
Carrying lonely mast with me...
Again in well of trance I fell...
Where I sail? Astray I gone...
Snow awoke, in fog then turned;
Neither boat, nor shallop; log -
Olden fallen tree, and sea...
None is seen, but changing forms of fog:
Whether sailing boat, or rock, or man...
Water black as coal appal;
Sudden, someone to me came...
Blear, hazy figure of
Mag in front of me on water standing,
Said to me, "A lone
Mast with seaman seeking saving..."
Me: Answer, master, please,
Where carry waters these
Me..? Whereto?
Mag:
Bear waves a mast, alas,
Doesn't see it, Who indeed
Carries it, and where, ah, -
Where should - to me believe...
Me: On denizens of heavens lofty say...
Mag:
Abdullāh Ibn Mas'ūd related that
The messenger of God, be he blessed, said:
The lovers in God will be on the pillar
Of ruby vermeil. In the capital of it
There are seventy thousand chambers
Prepared for them. Their splendour shines for the dwellers
Of Eden as shines a sun for the dwellers
Of Earth. The inhabitants of Paradise say:
Honour us with thy visit that we may
Look at the lovers in God, exalted is He.
When they descend to the dwellers of Eden,
Their beauty will be shining as sun
Is shining for the dwellers of Earth. The garments
Of lovers in God are woven of choicest
Green silk. Is written upon their foreheads -
"Those lovers in God, exalted, majestic is He."

From their ethics: Don't be with those
who desire things, goods of this world.
Saith mighty God, "So avoid him who
has turned away from Our remembrance, and
desires not but the life of this world."¹

Where are the traces left?
Where are waystones..?
Desert only knows where are the tracks,
Only holy tombs the secrets know...
But hearken to this poesy -
It be a sign, waystone for thee:
با عاشقان نشین و همه عاشقی گزین
با هر که نیست عاشق کم کن قرینیا
باشد گه وصال ببینند روی دوست
تو نیز در میانهٔ ایشان ببینیا
تا اندران میانه، که بینند روی او
تو نیز در میانهٔ ایشان نشینیا
With lovers sit, and be and choose
Them only. Those who are not lovers - few,
Few moments be with them; And when
At union with God, they shall
His Face behold, and so
You too among them shall behold,
Because while they are contemplating Him,
With them you sit...

Yet at last, before us strand,
Echo does resound...
Whisper of the hills familiar; scent
Of Spring, we reached Tabriz, but how?
I do not know...
