Tabriz. Mount Misho
Bring ye, winebearer, claret, and you -
The musician, play rūd...
For today I drink wine,
For today we are joyous, blithe...
Rudakī
Along the road I go, cloud
Yellow as a mellow cheerful sound,
Is following me slow...
Maybé 'tis dream of past; The mount Mishou
Is pondering about...
But what about, tell me, mount...
"But hark to this..." Replied the mount, "This..."
And hills repeated, "This..."
Released my thoughts, become a flow -
The flow of tinctures, melodies did roll,
And wheeled, with feelings mixed;
In quill I turned and wrought calligraphy
On paper or some space, I do
Not know, the drawing flew,
Became a sail and faded in the clouds...
"Drink yet another cup of sounds
Of Spring..." Whispered Misho mount...
But loud flaps of many wings I hear,
As voice of storm, so close, here...
But spinning, spinning head of mine;
I see young dervish with a cup of wine...
Dervish: Aye, thy journey did succeed,
The moth is lost in dreams, in dreams...
Me: But well of dreams and visions - deep;
I fell, and falling as a leaf in it...
Dervish:
Alas, this timelessness, and only we
In the strandless, shoreless sea...
The keel, and night, and the cloud; we drift
By the grace and help of God in His sea...¹
Rumi
Where is a sail - the wind is there,
Where is a seeker - waysigns are there...
But read the scriptures, read, -
The ray on water limn...
In the spirit - a dream is like naught,
But see, on the dreams is whirling the world.
Rumi, Masnavi 70
But what are dreams -
The birds unseen, they be
Fragile reality... They to the lakes
Come flying not in vain...
Those dreams that ensnare the saints -
Are reflexes from garden of God, of moon-faced.
Rumi, Masnavi 72
When moon on pool the ray does cast -
The images appear, allure, ask
Thee to respond, or show, or warn...
But this indeed is loving God
Who sent His lunar-lords to guide.
Their thoughts do foster thee to fly
After thy dream, they lead
To good, and truth, and bliss...
Or warn of danger; learn
To listen and distinguish from
The thoughts and whispers of the demons, who
Lead you to negligence, and chasm of gloom,
Inciting hatreed, envy, malice, greed,
Immoral deeds...
From heart these crows repel away...
Me: Of this well of dreams do say...
Dervish:
Draw the birds on water signs,
Who can read it, - only wise...
Lucid lake reflect the heavens;
From the fen - is smell unpleasant.
When a man travels in the world of his
imagination, he, by grace of God, will reach
the world of subtle entities, and see
the things as they be, and gift unique
will be granted him, unattainable by seeking.²
Ibn 'Arabi
Seaman drifting in the ocean of
The reflections, phantoms, birds...
But see, indeed, this ocean be
An ink-pot; And thy boat in it - adrift...
Mirror does reflect all what it sees...
But who are ye..? -
A quill... Write then, reveal
This unique and shoreless world,
Which for thee is only ope'd...
This ink-pot is precious gift
Calling thee, "Reveal, reveal..."
Thus yourself you shall reveal, and God;
And the Name of marvel will be yours...
The opening is a summit of mercy and grace.³
Ibn 'Arabi
Unlocking doors and gates -
Bestowal rare...
Exert yourself; remember that -
By deeds - degree and rank...
Me: On night dreams to me, please, tell...
Dervish:
Maybe will appear subtle entities to him
in vests of dreams; for the first
how subtle entities appear -
in a sleep - in vests of dreams.
Umar Suhrawardi
Under the pall of doze and sleep
Vague images appear, flee...
Then at awákening do diffuse,
As cries of flying away mews...
But those dreams that be
On water clear seen,
And in the memory remain -
To subtle world belongs it... Take
Heed, and if
One and the same bird to thee
Comes flying twice or more, - take heed...
Then he gave a cup of wine to me,
And said, "Drink this, and to others give..."
