Tabriz. Whispering Hill

There is no Your place except spirit that,
There is not a mine in Your rock as that mine;
Sufi roaming - seek if ye can...
In yourself that mine seek, don't seek outside.
Rumi

Brooding hill, ye whisper mist'ly;
By strange shadows crept the whisper
Disappearing, then appearing... feeling of
Amazement or
A dissolution in a tune of whisper; Keel
Is drifting vague on waves of hills -
Vision faint and fugitive...
I see the hill is pensive, thoughts are flowing
By the heaving water; floating
On it keel - a dream... But hill,
Tell me name of your illusive keel...
"Fleeing to the open sea..." The hill replied;
Then it vanished from my eyes...
In the sky a whisper melted,
Only left - the clouds pallid...
Máybe this yet only seems,
But although milky gleam
On the sky entice, conjures...
In my head are yells of mews,
"On another side of hill -
Where rests a shadow, seek..."
I did; in niche, in shade
I met the dervish young, "Good day..."
He smiling said, and sat on mat,
Holding some olden book in hands.

Dervish: Many a hundred years ago
I too much loved to stroll alone
Among these hills...

Me: I found my heart amid
These hills of whisper and of poesy...

Dervish:

Abu Mahammad bin Ruwaym was asked
about the ethics of journeying, he said:
Shouldn't the ardour outstrip the steps,
where settled thy heart and stayed -
there is your place.
Umar Suhrawardi

Where is thy heart - there winds
Of inspiration breathe...

Me: Please, tell me on abodes and states¹...

Dervish:

What is abode? - In haven anchored keel;
What is a state - A scud of wind...
O breeze, do carry me
From haven to the haven, sail of white
Is hoisted - heart of mine...

The station is: a place of staying and
fulfilling its conditions.
They call the state: a sense
which comes in heart.
Al-Qushayri

These stations - ladder,
Its steps - the changes be;
The states what changes thee, asleep -
That heart which doesn't change...

I heard that Sheikhs of Iraq say:
The state is a gift of God.
Umar Suhrawardi

But who is the giver of winds, say...
Only Master of hearts, to Him pray...

And some Sheikhs of Khorasan say:
The states are fruits of deeds.
Umar Suhrawardi

Cast a stone into the water, watch
These rounds, rounds... Sow
In soil a grain... - See, how germinates;
Each deed to be repaid...
Who seeks and strive - will find,
Who sits and wait - shall wait away the whole life...

The states are granted, and
The stations - earned.
Al-Qushayri

The wind did say: I am the gift
Of God, yet even if
From North I blow, but
The choice is yours - to open sail, or not;
If thou shall, - I carry thee
Where should... in lieu, until
Ye learn its wisdom and fulfil
Its obligations, then
To another harbour I shall carry thee, yet changed.
But if ye shall reject the gift -
I'll burn thy heart away with it...

When the haven - near, ye shall feel;
After sorrow - comes relief;
Hope does change for trust in God;
Every haven has its birds...
But how many stations are?
Look at the sky, and count stars...

To God be praise! The gratitude -
Is key. And yet remember rule:

قال بعضهم: لا ينبغي أن ينتقل عن
الذي هو فيه دون أن يُحكم حكم مقامه

Said one of them: You shouldn't leave
abode without having learned its wisdom.
Umar Suhrawardi
