Balkh. The Fretted Door
Gravel whispers under feet,
"Do not step where shadow sleeps!"
Slowly creeps the rifted wall,
"Do not wake the shade, do not!"
Stones rare red methinks
Count, "One and two and three..."
By some fretted door I stop'd,
Ornament has uttered words:
- Here wait and warden be,
The gate-keeper we do need...
By the door, rolled in a black,
With important look I sat...
From the ruins far away
Flows down colour grey;
Stones only and the grass...
Minute after minute pass...
Yet I see the wind from North
Is approaching as a gauze...
Wind: I have brought the olden book,
Tell about Ad, Faraoh, Thamud...
Me: But hearken to Baghdadian Qutb:
فأهلكهم سبحانه واستأصلهم بعدما أفرطوا
في أطوارهم الخارجة عن حد الاعتدال
وهؤلاء المذكورين هم: 〈ٱلَّذِينَ طَغَوْاْ فِي ٱلْبِلاَدِ〉
واستكبروا على ضعفاء العباد اتكالاً بما عندهم من
المَّال والجاه والثروة والسيادة. 〈فَأَكْثَرُواْ فِيهَا ٱلْفَسَادَ〉
أي: أنواع الكفر والظلم والعناد. وبعدما بالغوا في
الفساد والإفساد 〈فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ〉
So destroyed them God, majestic is He,
and extirpated after they had exceeded
the limit of harmony.
Those mentioned are: "Those who perpetrated
crimes in the lands" - in their haughtiness
contemned the weak servants, relying upon
their gold, and fame, wealth and position.
"And increased much corruption therein" -
kinds of disbelief, injustice, and perversity.
And when they reached the measure of corruption
and sin, "So your Lord hath unleashed
upon them a scourge of punishment."

As for the Faraoh and his guards,
We have remark:
Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great monster that
lieth in the midst of his rivers, that
hath said, My river is mine own and I have
made it for myself.
Ezekiel 29:3
What is worse than penalty? -
Reduction, changing for another be.
إِنَّهُمْ يَكِيدُونَ كَيْدًا
وَأَكِيدُ كَيْدًا
Verily they are plotting a plot.
And I am plotting a plot.
Qur'an 86:15,16
〈وَأَكِيدُ〉 أيضاً في أخذهم وانتقامهم بعدما
استحقوا الأخذ والانتقام 〈كَيْداً〉 على سبيل
الاستدراج والإمهال، بحيث لا يحتسبون،
بل يحملون إمهالنا على الإهمال
"And I am plotting" - also to grip them
and avenge on them after they
deserved it. "A plot" - in the way
of enticement and respite, meanwhile
they are heedless, and Our respite misuse.
